Students enrolled in this course will explore the fundamentals of art making. This course provides students with opportunities to develop the skills and abilities needed to express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings in visual form. The lessons are focused on utilizing the elements of design which are; line, shape, form, color, texture, value, repetition, emphasis, contrast, and space. Students will learn skills and techniques related to the application of basic art mediums such as; pencil, oil pastel, collage, watercolor, tempera, acrylic paint. Weekly journal assignments focus on observational drawing and provide opportunities for development of the drawing skills demonstrated in class. Students will also become aware of a variety of art styles, art periods, and artists throughout history.

Developing an Art Journal

On-going weekly assignment Sketching and creating a collection of observational drawings using a variety of geometric and organic shaped objects. Drawings, Sketches, Ideas, and Visual Resources will be collected in the Art Journal. Journaling is a vital tool for all artists for recording ideas, experimenting with techniques and subjects, and capturing inspiration. Take and collect photos of interesting textures, lighting, subjects, etc. and fix them into your journal. In addition, complete the following artworks based on these prompts in your journal.

Many students say,"I don't like still life's, can I paint something else"?Learning to "see" is the first and most important skill a student must learn to develop. By far the humble still life is most emphatically the very best place to do this for several reasons. Nowhere are color, value relationships based on light more consistent and straightforward than in a still life. Everything the student needs to learn is long-lived and clearly stated in a still life without deviation or distortion as in a photograph. This gives the student time to study, see and perform without the stress of the ever-moving light found in the landscape or of subject matter that twists, turns, and moves through the scene.
